FMS is primarily responsible for financial policy oversight, quality assurance, and financial services at Stanford University and its affiliated entities.JOB PURPOSEIn this challenging and rewarding role, you will contribute to the Investment Accounting team. This position requires effective technical accounting skills, strong financial stewardship, and commitment to governance processes.The Real Estate Accounting Manager will support the Senior Real Estate Accounting Manager and Staff Accountants by performing complex accounting functions. This newly created position focuses on managing and monitoring the accounting for the University's real estate properties. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated and experienced individual with a strong real estate accounting, financial reporting, and operational support background.This position demands a flexible, detail-oriented mindset, a genuine enthusiasm for the work, and a collaborative, dynamic approach to problem-solving. The individual will work closely with internal departments, such as Stanford Management Company, Stanford Land Building Real Estate, Faculty Staff Housing, and external property managers, ensuring accurate and timely accounting and reporting of real estate properties. Strong communication skills are essential for coordinating processes across various departments.Additionally, the individual will leverage leadership and analytical skills to handle complex financial matters while ensuring compliance with industry regulations and internal policies. The ideal candidate will be skilled in problem-solving, process improvement, and implementing best practices for reporting and controls.

  • Performing complex and technical accounting functions for the real estate portfolio.
  • Oversee and manage daily accounting and financial reporting for the University's real estate properties, ensuring compliance with GAAP, internal policies, and relevant regulations.
  • Participate in real estate transactions, including acquisitions, dispositions, and capital improvements.
  • Perform complex and detailed reconciliations, closure processes, research, and critical analyses.
  • Lead the preparation and analysis of reports that consolidate multiple data points.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders and external property managers to ensure accurate and timely reporting.
  • Preparing management reports and analyses to explain financial results.
  • Manage and oversee employees' work, making hiring decisions and providing coaching.
  • Maintain and enhance compliance with internal controls.
  • Participating in critical analysis of existing systems and processes.
  • Collaborate with staff to ensure consistency in interpreting policies and regulations.
  • Assist the senior manager in coordinating and developing the annual operating plan.TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS POSITION, YOU WILL BRING:Education & Experience:
    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or Economics and eight plus years of applicable experience, or combination of education and relevant work experience.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
      • Strong understanding of real estate investment structures, financial reporting, and GAAP.
      • Minimum 7-10 years of applicable experience.
      • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
      • Ability to communicate decisions while educating at the same time.
      • Strong sense of service orientation.
      • Prominent level of professionalism and integrity.
      • Other necessary skills include excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
      • Advanced proficiency in business applications, such as Microsoft Office.In Addition, Preferred Requirements Include:
        • Demonstrated knowledge of real estate investment software and ERP systems.
        • General understanding of SQL or relational database knowledge.
